Rachel’s Weeping and God’s Comfort
Rachel is poetically heard weeping in Ramah for children who are gone, giving the national catastrophe a mother’s grief. Yet God immediately answers the tears with hope: the children will return, Ephraim is still His dear son, and the road home should be marked because restoration is coming.
Coming Savior connection: Jeremiah 31:22 has sometimes been used in Christian tradition as a hidden virgin-birth prophecy because of the unusual phrase “a woman shall compass a man.” The New Testament never quotes this verse about Jesus’ birth, and the Hebrew is difficult enough that it should not be presented as a clear prediction of the virgin conception. The explicit virgin-birth fulfillment text in the New Testament is Isaiah 7:14 as quoted in Matthew 1. Jeremiah 31:22 is best kept as an unusual restoration saying, with the historic Christian interpretation noted only as a disputed tradition.
