The Deception of the Gibeonites
Joshua 9 is a lesson in discernment and integrity. The unity of Israel’s enemies shows the opposition God’s people face, while the deception of the Gibeonites reveals the danger of making decisions without seeking God’s counsel. Yet even in the misstep, the Gibeonites are spared and assigned service associated with Israel’s worship.
The Gibeonite deception exploits the fact that Israel was forbidden to make covenant with the peoples of the land, making their false claim of distant origin central to the ruse. Covenant geography is therefore essential to understanding the deception.
