The Kings Unite Against Israel
Joshua 9 is a lesson in discernment and integrity. The unity of Israel’s enemies shows the opposition God’s people face, while the deception of the Gibeonites reveals the danger of making decisions without seeking God’s counsel. Yet even in the misstep, the Gibeonites are spared and assigned service associated with Israel’s worship.
The coalition of Canaanite peoples in Joshua stands in the same conquest setting Moses described when listing the nations Israel would confront under Deuteronomy’s covenant-war instructions.
