Judgment on Achan
Joshua 7 serves as a sobering reminder that disobedience, even by one, can bring defeat to many. The hidden sin of Achan led to Israel’s loss at Ai, but God’s exposure and judgment restored His presence among them.
Hosea explicitly reuses the Valley of Achor—Joshua’s place of trouble and judgment—and transforms its remembered meaning into “a door of hope,” turning an old judgment-site into restoration imagery.
Isaiah later names the Valley of Achor as part of restored pasture and peace, deliberately reversing Joshua’s remembered site of Achan’s trouble into an image of renewed covenant blessing.
Joshua 22 explicitly recalls Achan’s trespass as a warning that one household’s covenant breach can bring consequences on the wider congregation, interpreting the earlier Joshua 7 crisis from within the book itself.
