Twelve Stones from the Jordan
Joshua 4 captures the importance of remembering and declaring God’s works. The twelve stones taken from the Jordan became a physical testimony to God’s faithfulness and power, ensuring that future generations would know the story of His deliverance.
Joshua’s twelve memorial stones are designed so that future children will ask what they mean, echoing Passover’s command that parents explain the memorial of deliverance when children ask. Both passages build intergenerational teaching around a visible sign and a future question.
Joshua’s memorial stones enact Deuteronomy’s pattern of answering children’s future questions by retelling YHWH’s saving acts and connecting the next generation to covenant memory.
