The Ten Commandments Repeated
Deuteronomy 5:6–21 is the movement “The Ten Commandments Repeated.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.” It closes with: “Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour’s.”
Scripture also places this passage inside a wider canonical network. Inherited approved relationship: Jesus quotes the murder command and presses its moral direction into anger and contempt. Jesus explicitly cites the command to honor father and mother while arguing that a human tradition must not nullify God's command.
