Revelation 6:10
Revelation 6:9–10 shows slain witnesses beneath the altar crying, “How long?” for righteous judgment. Their prayer belongs to the long biblical lament tradition in which faithful sufferers appeal to God’s justice rather than taking vengeance into their own hands. The altar setting also presents their deaths as lives poured out in faithful witness.
Revelation 6:9–11 opens the fifth seal and reveals martyrs beneath the altar asking how long judgment will be delayed. They receive white robes and are told to rest until the number of fellow servants who will also be killed is complete. The passage holds together divine justice, present waiting, and the costly witness of the saints.
Revelation’s slain witnesses cry for God to judge and avenge their blood, resonating with Deuteronomy 32’s promise that YHWH will avenge the blood of his servants. The plea awaits the vindication promised in the Song.
