Christ, the Gentiles, and the Hope of the Root of Jesse

“Receive ye one another, as Christ also received us.” Paul then says Christ became a servant of the circumcision to confirm the promises made to the fathers and so that Gentiles might glorify God for mercy. Jewish promise and Gentile praise belong to one gospel story rather than rival plans.

Paul builds a four-text scriptural catena: the royal song preserved in 2 Samuel 22/Psalm 18, Deuteronomy 32, Psalm 117, and Isaiah 11. The final text names the Root of Jesse who rises to rule the Gentiles and becomes their hope. Paul explicitly applies this Isaianic Davidic figure to Christ.

Aha: the worldwide church is not presented as a detour around Israel’s Scriptures. Paul hears Torah, David, Psalms, and Isaiah already moving toward the nations praising Israel’s God through the Messiah.
