The Greatest Commandments: Love God and Neighbor
A scribe asks which commandment is greatest. Jesus begins with Israel’s confession from Deuteronomy 6: “Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord,” and commands wholehearted love for God. He then joins Leviticus 19:18: love your neighbor as yourself. The scribe agrees that this love is more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices, and Jesus tells him he is not far from the kingdom.
Where this fits in the story: Jesus does not answer by discarding Torah but by drawing its central loyalties together. Love for the one God and concrete love for neighbor belong inseparably.
