Jesus Christ, Son of David, Son of Abraham
Matthew opens with more than a name. “Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham” places Jesus inside two of the Bible’s largest promise streams before the genealogy even begins. Abraham carries the promise of blessing reaching the nations; David carries the promise of an enduring royal line. The word “Christ” identifies Jesus as Messiah, the anointed one toward whom those promises converge.
Where this fits in the story: Genesis 12:1–3 begins the Abrahamic blessing trajectory; 2 Samuel 7:12–16 develops the Davidic royal promise. Matthew’s opening title joins them around Jesus.
