Cities of Refuge and the Protection of Innocent Blood
Deuteronomy 19:1–13 is the movement “Cities of Refuge and the Protection of Innocent Blood.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;” It closes with: “Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.”
