Living Water at Jacob’s Well
Jesus enters Samaritan territory and sits at Jacob’s well, a real geographical setting loaded with patriarchal memory. His request for a drink crosses ethnic and gender boundaries, while his offer of “living water” moves the conversation from ordinary water to God’s life-giving gift. Biblical prophets use spring and living-water imagery for God’s own provision, restoration, and future presence, and later John 7 explicitly interprets living water in relation to the Spirit. The scene also resembles biblical well encounters without simply copying the marriage type-scene: here the outcome is revelation and mission, not a wedding.
