The Harvest Mission: Seventy—or Seventy-Two—Sent Ahead of the Lord

Jesus appoints a larger group—seventy in some manuscripts, seventy-two in others—and sends them ahead of him into towns he intends to visit. They proclaim that the kingdom of God has come near and depend on hospitality rather than self-sufficiency.

Where this fits in the story: the mission broadens beyond the Twelve and anticipates Luke-Acts’ outward movement. The disputed number has invited connections to the nations listed in Genesis traditions, but those symbolic proposals must be stated cautiously because both the manuscript number and the relevant ancient counting traditions vary.

The core point is secure regardless of 70/72: Jesus multiplies witnesses and makes reception of their kingdom message a matter of response to himself.
