Today: The Holy Spirit Revoices Psalm 95
Hebrews introduces Psalm 95 with the striking words “as the Holy Ghost saith,” treating the ancient psalm as God’s present speech. The psalm looks back to Israel’s wilderness rebellion at Meribah/Massah and warns a later generation not to harden its heart. Hebrews then addresses that “Today” to the Christian congregation. Scripture is not merely archival: the same God who spoke through the psalm confronts hearers now. The wilderness generation saw God’s works yet resisted him, and the result was exclusion from his rest. This becomes the foundation of Hebrews’ extended theology of perseverance and rest.
