Forgetting Wonders, Testing God, and Receiving Bread from Heaven
Israel repeatedly forgets God’s works, tests him in the wilderness, questions whether he can provide, and then receives water and bread from heaven. The abundance of provision does not automatically produce faith; people can eat God’s gifts while still distrusting the Giver.
John 6:31 cites the bread-from-heaven tradition using wording that overlaps Psalm 78:24, while also drawing on the Exodus manna story. The source relationship is therefore real but composite rather than a simple isolated quotation. John’s argument then moves beyond manna to Jesus as the true bread from heaven. A careful reading should teach both layers: Psalm 78 interprets Israel’s wilderness unbelief, and John reuses that scriptural memory in a Christ-centered bread discourse.
