Israel Refuses the Land and Talks of Returning to Egypt
The fear of Numbers 13 becomes open rebellion. Israel weeps, accuses YHWH, talks of appointing a leader to return to Egypt, and threatens Joshua and Caleb. The issue is now explicit unbelief: the people prefer remembered slavery to trusting God into the promised land.
Psalm 106 interprets Israel’s refusal at the land as despising the pleasant land and not believing YHWH’s word, matching the rebellion that erupts after the spies’ report. The psalm therefore interprets the spy-generation rebellion as unbelief and contempt for God’s promised inheritance.
