The Spies Report a Fruitful Land and Formidable Peoples
The spies agree on one crucial point: the land really is fruitful. They also report fortified cities and formidable peoples. The problem is not that they observed difficulty; the crisis comes in what Israel does with those observations—whether strength in the land cancels confidence in YHWH’s promise.
Deuteronomy recalls the spies bringing back fruit and calling the land good before Israel’s fear and rebellion, directly retelling the report scene of Numbers 13. Moses’ later speech interprets the same spy report and rebellion for the next generation rather than narrating a separate scouting event.
