The Cloud Lifts and Israel Leaves Sinai
On the twentieth day of the second month in the second year, the cloud lifts and Israel begins the journey away from Sinai. The people who arrived at the mountain in Exodus are now ordered, numbered, supplied, and moving toward the promised land. Deuteronomy later looks back on this same departure from Horeb.
Numbers 10 narrates Israel finally leaving Sinai; Deuteronomy 1 later recalls YHWH’s command at Horeb that Israel had stayed long enough and should turn toward the land. Moses’ later speech identifies the same departure from Horeb as the beginning of Israel’s movement toward the promised land.
