The Levites Set Apart to Guard the Tabernacle
Levi is deliberately left out of the military census because the Levites receive a different assignment. They are placed over the Tabernacle, its furnishings, its transport, its setup, and its guarding. They also camp around the sanctuary.
Why this matters: the Tabernacle is not simply one tent among thousands. It is the holy center of Israel’s camp. Numbers 1:53 says the Levites keep charge around it so that wrath does not fall on the congregation. Their position creates an ordered boundary around sacred space.
