YHWH Commands Israel’s Military Census
God commands Moses and Aaron to register Israel by tribe, family, ancestral household, and individual name. The group being counted is defined carefully: males twenty years old and upward who are able to go to war. This is therefore not a count of every Israelite person.
Where this fits in the story: Exodus 30:11–16 had already established census language and the twenty-year threshold. Numbers now applies census practice to a tribal military muster as Israel prepares to leave Sinai.
Why it matters: the census turns the rescued slaves of Exodus into an ordered covenant community preparing for movement, responsibility, and conflict.
