Shem, Eber, and the Narrowing Line — From the Nations toward Abram
Genesis 10 ends by turning particular attention to Shem and his descendants. The chapter still concerns the nations, but the narrative is beginning to narrow. Eber appears within Shem’s line, Peleg is associated with a time when the earth was divided, and the chapter closes by summarizing humanity according to families, languages, lands, and nations after the Flood.
Genesis 11 immediately takes two of those themes and develops them. First it tells the Babel story, explaining the confusion of language and scattering. Then it traces a more focused genealogy from Shem through Arphaxad, Eber, Peleg, and the generations leading to Terah and Abram. The broad Table of Nations therefore gives way to a selected family line.
