From Idols to the Living God, Waiting for the Risen Son
Other people are already repeating the Thessalonians’ story: they turned from idols to serve the living and true God and to wait for his Son from heaven. Jesus is identified by resurrection and by future deliverance from coming wrath.
Where this fits in the story: the prophets repeatedly contrast the living God with powerless idols; Acts describes Gentile mission in the same turn-from-vanities direction; and the resurrection of Jesus becomes the pledge of God’s coming judgment and rescue. The entire letter’s eschatology is already present in miniature—conversion, service, waiting, resurrection, and deliverance.
