Counting Every Gain as Loss to Know Christ

If religious pedigree could secure confidence before God, Paul says he has an unusually strong case: circumcised on the eighth day, Israelite, Benjaminite, Hebrew, Pharisee, zealous persecutor, outwardly blameless under the law. He does not deny that these were real advantages. He revalues them. What had been “gain” is now “loss” beside the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.

Where this fits in the story: Paul’s autobiographical claims match the portrait in Acts and Galatians. His central contrast is between “mine own righteousness, which is of the law” and “the righteousness which is of God by faith.” The disputed Greek phrase behind “faith of Christ” also connects this verse to major Pauline passages in Romans and Galatians. Paul’s goal is not merely a new status but participation: knowing Christ, resurrection power, fellowship in sufferings, conformity to his death, and resurrection.

Aha: conversion did not give Paul a better religious résumé. It taught him to stop using the résumé as righteousness.
