One Body with Many Members
Paul compares the church to a human body: many members, one body. “So also is Christ.” By one Spirit believers—Jews and Greeks, enslaved and free—are brought into one body and made to drink of one Spirit. Social differences remain real, but they do not create separate levels of belonging.
The metaphor answers both inferiority and superiority. The foot cannot say it does not belong because it is not a hand; the eye cannot say it does not need the hand. God has arranged the body so weaker or less honored members receive special care.
Aha: Christian unity is not sameness. Paul’s body theology insists on mutual dependence. A church in which one class of gifted people can function without the others is not Paul’s vision of maturity.
