Peter’s Boast, Gethsemane, Abba, and the Cup
After singing a hymn, Jesus predicts that the disciples will scatter and quotes Zechariah 13:7: strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered. Peter insists that even if everyone else fails, he will not. In Gethsemane Jesus becomes deeply distressed, asks Peter, James, and John to watch, and prays “Abba, Father,” asking if the cup might pass yet submitting to the Father’s will. Three times the disciples sleep.
Where this fits in the story: Scripture’s judgment-cup imagery gives depth to Jesus’ prayer. He is not merely afraid of pain; Mark presents him deliberately accepting the path he has taught as necessary. The disciples’ failure to watch also echoes the command that closed chapter 13.
