When Israel Was a Child, I Loved Him
The LORD remembers Israel as a beloved child called out of Egypt, taught to walk, healed, and drawn with cords of human kindness and bands of love. The heartbreak is that the more God called, the more the people turned toward Baals. Hosea’s exodus theology is relational: deliverance created a son-like covenant relationship that Israel has violated.
Matthew 2:15 quotes Hosea 11:1 about Jesus’ return from Egypt. Hosea is plainly looking backward to the exodus, not making a simple future prediction. Matthew’s inspired use is therefore a major example of typological or figural fulfillment: Jesus, the Son, retraces Israel’s story and embodies faithful Israel. This is exactly the kind of Christological connection a responsible reading must explain rather than merely label “prophecy fulfilled.” The New Testament reveals a pattern that was concealed in Israel’s own history.
