Scripture also places this passage inside a wider canonical network. The lex talionis is explicit Torah. A deeper study should distinguish its judicial setting and proportional-justice function from Jesus' instructions for disciples' personal response to injury, insult, coercion, and demands. Jesus explicitly invokes the Torah's two-or-three-witness principle in the escalating process of confronting a sinning brother. First Timothy directly reuses Torah’s two-or-three-witness rule for accusations against an elder.

The key reading question is therefore not simply, “What rule or event appears here?” but, “What does this movement teach Israel about the LORD, covenant loyalty, life in the land, and the consequences of trusting or resisting His word?”
