Works of the Flesh and Fruit of the Spirit
Paul names visible “works of the flesh” that range from sexual sin and idolatry to relational sins such as hatred, rivalry, envy, and faction. He warns that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s kingdom. In contrast stands one “fruit of the Spirit” expressed in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith/faithfulness, meekness, and self-control. Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh, and because they live by the Spirit they are called to keep in step with the Spirit rather than provoke or envy one another.
