Do Not Destroy God’s Work over Food
Paul tells the stronger believer to stop putting a stumbling block before a brother or sister. He is persuaded “by the Lord Jesus” that nothing is unclean in itself, yet conscience and love still matter: if eating grieves another believer, freedom has ceased to walk according to love.
The kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. The practical aim is peace and mutual edification. Paul can say food is clean while also saying it becomes sinful to eat in defiance of one’s conscience, because “whatsoever is not of faith is sin.”
Aha: mature freedom in Romans 14 is measured not by how many rights a person can exercise, but by whether freedom builds up the people for whom Christ died.
