Saints, Servants, Grace, and Peace
Paul and Timothy open as servants of Jesus Christ and address the whole church at Philippi together with its overseers and deacons. The greeting is brief, but it already places every identity in relation to Christ: Paul and Timothy serve him; the believers are saints in him; grace and peace come from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Where this fits in the story: Acts 16 tells how the Philippian congregation began amid prayer by the river, Lydia’s household, persecution, imprisonment, an earthquake, and the conversion of the jailer’s household. Years later the church has recognizable local leadership and remains deeply tied to Paul. The New Testament repeatedly uses “saints” not for a spiritual elite but for ordinary believers set apart in Christ.
