Good works that glorify the Father
Matthew 5 does not present Jesus as throwing away the Old Testament. He says the opposite: he has not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them. Then he takes familiar commands about murder, adultery, truthfulness, justice, and neighbor-love and drives kingdom righteousness into the heart, relationships, speech, retaliation, and even love of enemies.
Jesus moves from blessing to vocation. His disciples are salt of the earth and light of the world, and their visible good works should lead others to glorify the Father. The point is neither retreat from the world nor performance for personal applause; it is faithful public witness whose praise terminates in God.
Where this fits in the story: Isaiah repeatedly imagines light associated with God’s saving work and the nations. Zion/light texts can illuminate the image, but Matthew does not identify this saying as a quotation.
Where Scripture takes it next: Matthew’s ending sends disciples to all nations, extending the public witness implied here.
Evidence boundary: “salt” had several ancient uses—seasoning, preservation, covenantal and sacrificial associations. No single background should be asserted as the one secret meaning unless the passage itself narrows it. Likewise, “city on a hill” need not name a specific historical city.
Matthew 5:16 tells disciples to let visible good works lead others to glorify the Father; 1 Timothy 2:8–10 likewise treats good works as the fitting adornment of people who profess godliness. The relationship is a strong ethical parallel, not a quotation claim.
