Zacchaeus: Salvation Comes to a Son of Abraham

Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector and wealthy man, climbs a tree to see Jesus. Jesus publicly chooses his house, provoking grumbling, but Zacchaeus answers the visit with generous restitution. Jesus declares that salvation has come to the house because this man too is a son of Abraham.

Where this fits in the story: Luke’s wealth theme reaches a surprising turn. A rich man can respond where the rich ruler could not, and Abrahamic identity is connected with transformed conduct rather than social respectability.

Jesus’ closing statement summarizes the mission: “the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost,” linking Zacchaeus directly to Luke 15’s lost-and-found joy.
