A Little Wine and the Visibility of Character
A remarkably personal instruction interrupts the leadership material: Timothy should no longer drink only water but use a little wine for his stomach and frequent illnesses. The verse is neither a command for universal alcohol use nor a prohibition against medical care. It is a concrete pastoral instruction to a particular person with recurring physical trouble.
Paul immediately returns to discernment. Some sins are obvious before formal judgment; others emerge later. Good works likewise may be plainly visible or may take time to surface, but they cannot remain hidden forever. That observation explains the preceding warning not to lay hands on anyone hastily. Leadership discernment requires time because character is not always instantly legible.
