Be an Example and Attend to the Public Reading
Timothy is not told to defeat contempt for his youth by demanding respect. He is told to become an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. Authority and credibility are joined to visible formation.
Until Paul comes, Timothy must devote himself to “reading,” exhortation, and teaching. In context, the reading is naturally public reading of Scripture, a practice with deep roots in Israel’s assemblies and the synagogue. Nehemiah 8 depicts the Torah read and explained before the people; Luke portrays Jesus reading Isaiah in the synagogue; Acts shows readings from the Law and Prophets. First Timothy places the emerging Christian assembly inside that Scripture-hearing world. The church learns by hearing Scripture read, then receiving exhortation and teaching that help it live what it has heard.
