Paul, Timothy, the Saviour, and Our Hope
First Timothy opens with God called “our Saviour” and Jesus Christ called “our hope.” That pairing matters for the whole letter: salvation belongs to God, hope is concentrated in Christ, and Timothy’s ministry exists under divine command rather than personal ambition. Timothy is not merely an employee; Paul calls him his true child in the faith, language that fits the wider New Testament portrait of Timothy as a trusted coworker shaped by the gospel.
The greeting also prepares the book’s pastoral tone. Grace, mercy, and peace are not decorative words. They are what a church threatened by false teaching, damaged consciences, greed, quarrels, and disorder actually needs. From the first two verses, doctrine and life are inseparable: the truth about God our Saviour produces a community meant to embody grace, mercy, peace, faith, and hope.
