The Land Mourns: Wine, Grain, Trees, and Joy Cut Off
The plague moves through every layer of life: wine disappears, vines and fig trees are stripped, grain fails, farmers mourn, temple offerings cease, and human joy withers with the land. Joel presents creation and worship as intertwined. Israel’s covenant blessings were never merely private spirituality; they included rain, crops, food, festivals, and life before God. The devastation therefore sounds like the agricultural covenant curses warned about in the Torah. When the grain, wine, and oil vanish, ordinary meals, livelihoods, and sanctuary worship all feel the wound together.
