A Disaster to Tell Every Generation
Joel opens without a king, battle, or dated reign. He begins with a catastrophe so severe that elders are told to remember it and parents to pass it to their children. The repeated devouring locust language turns agricultural ruin into covenant instruction: this disaster must become part of Israel’s remembered story. The Exodus locust plague provides an earlier canonical backdrop, but Joel reverses the direction—what once struck Egypt now confronts the LORD’s own land. The point is not trivia about insects; judgment has reached home, and the people must learn to hear what God is saying through it.
