The Watchmen Wound Her
The city watchmen who were merely encountered in chapter 3 now become violent: they strike, wound, and strip the woman of her veil. The dreamlike search has turned dangerous. She still responds by charging the daughters of Jerusalem to tell the beloved that she is sick with love.
The contrast with 3:3 is important. The Song is not a simple sequence of idealized pastoral scenes; it also knows vulnerability, absence, social danger, and pain.
Historical context can clarify what watchmen did in walled cities, but archaeology cannot tell us whether this episode is a literal event, dream sequence, or stylized poem. The text leaves that open.
