The Beatitudes: The Blessed Life of the Kingdom
Jesus begins the Sermon not with a list of the powerful but with blessings for the poor in spirit, mourners, meek, hungry for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, and persecuted. The Beatitudes draw heavily on Israel’s Psalms and Prophets, where the humble wait for God, mourners are comforted, and the meek inherit the land.
Where this fits in the story: Psalm 37 promises inheritance to the meek; Isaiah announces good news to the poor and comfort for mourners; Psalm 24 joins purity of heart with approaching God.
Where Scripture takes it next: the rest of the Sermon describes the kingdom-shaped righteousness of people who live under these blessings, and Revelation carries the persecuted-faithful trajectory toward final comfort and inheritance.
