God Chooses the Weak So No Flesh May Boast
Paul asks the Corinthians to look at their own calling. Not many were wise by the world’s standards, powerful, or high-born. God’s choice repeatedly overturns status: foolish things shame the wise, weak things shame the strong, and things counted as nothing expose the emptiness of human boasting. This does not romanticize ignorance or weakness; it destroys the idea that social rank can place someone nearer to God.
Verse 31 quotes Jeremiah 9:24: “He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.” In Jeremiah, the contrast is with boasting in wisdom, might, and riches. Paul brings that prophetic warning directly into Corinth’s factional competition.
