The Books Opened and the Book of Life
Revelation 20:11–15 presents the great white throne before which earth and heaven flee. The dead, small and great, stand before God; books are opened, including the book of life, and judgment is according to works. Death and hell are themselves cast into the lake of fire, which Revelation identifies as the second death, showing that even death’s dominion is finally judged.
Revelation 20:12–15 centers the final judgment on opened books and the book of life. The dead are judged according to what is recorded concerning their works, while anyone not found written in the book of life is cast into the lake of fire. Revelation holds accountable judgment and belonging to God together without reducing either image to a merely decorative symbol.
Revelation’s final judgment opens the books and the book of life, carrying Philippians’ brief assurance of written names into the canon’s final judgment scene.
