Run to Obtain the Incorruptible Crown
Paul uses athletic imagery familiar in the wider Greek world and especially natural near Corinth, host region of the Isthmian Games. Runners compete for a perishable wreath; Christians pursue an imperishable reward. Athletes exercise self-control because their goal matters.
Paul applies the picture first to himself. He does not run aimlessly or box the air. He disciplines his body so that preaching to others does not coexist with personal disqualification.
Aha: grace does not make disciplined faithfulness unnecessary. Paul’s athletic metaphor joins confidence in the gospel with serious self-government: the runner is not earning salvation as a wage but taking the race seriously because the goal is real.
