Stand Fast in Love and Honor Faithful Servants
Paul compresses the letter’s ethic into a short series of commands: watch, stand fast in the faith, be courageous, be strong—and “let all your things be done with charity [love].” Strength without love would simply recreate Corinth’s competition; love without steadfastness would fail to protect truth.
The household of Stephanas, identified as the firstfruits of Achaia, has devoted itself to serving the saints. Paul asks the church to recognize and cooperate with such workers, along with Fortunatus and Achaicus, whose presence refreshed him.
Aha: after spending much of the letter correcting bad status-seeking, Paul still tells the church to honor people. The difference is the basis of honor: not self-promotion, wealth, or rhetorical prestige, but faithful service that refreshes Christ’s people.
