Poured Out, Race Finished, Crown Awaiting

Paul describes his approaching death with sacrificial and athletic imagery. He is already being “offered”—a verb used for being poured out as a drink offering. His “departure” is near. Looking back, he has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith; looking forward, he awaits the “crown of righteousness.”

Where this fits in the story: offerings poured before God belong to Israel’s sacrificial world, while athletic crowns belonged to the familiar Greco-Roman world. Both images are transformed by the gospel. Paul’s death is not payment for sin—Christ’s saving work is sufficient—but his life can be offered in faithful service. The crown is given by “the Lord, the righteous judge,” and not to Paul only but to all who love Christ’s appearing.
