Sacrifice with the Drink Offering
Immediately after a generation is sentenced to die in the wilderness, YHWH gives laws that begin by assuming Israel will enter the land. Offerings are accompanied by grain and drink offerings, and the same basic law applies to the native Israelite and the resident stranger. Judgment has not cancelled the land promise.
Paul’s being “poured out” upon the sacrifice and service of faith draws on the biblical world of drink offerings accompanying sacrifice. The imagery therefore turns Paul’s possible death into a worship metaphor without implying that apostolic ministry literally reenacts a Levitical libation.
Israel’s law prescribed wine poured before the LORD as a drink offering alongside sacrifices; 2 Timothy uses that sacrificial image for Paul’s approaching death: his life is being poured out in faithful service.
