Holy Conduct in Marriage: Sarah, Honor, and Heirs of Grace
Peter continues his household teaching with wives and husbands, but the theological pressure of the passage falls on witness, character, hope in God, honor, and shared inheritance. Wives with unbelieving husbands may commend the word through holy conduct. Peter points to Sarah as an example of a holy woman who hoped in God, while husbands are commanded to live with understanding and give honor to their wives as “heirs together of the grace of life.” The final warning is striking: a husband’s failure here can hinder his prayers. Household relationships are therefore brought under God’s judgment and grace, not left to ordinary social power.
