Content in Abundance and Need through the One Who Strengthens
Paul rejoices that the Philippians’ care for him has flourished again, but he carefully explains that Christian contentment is not dependent on the size of a gift. He has learned how to be abased and how to abound, how to be full and how to be hungry. Only then comes the famous statement, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Where this fits in the story: in context, “all things” refers to the range of conditions Paul has just named—plenty and need, fullness and hunger. Elsewhere Paul describes divine power becoming visible in weakness. The verse therefore promises strength for faithful endurance in radically different circumstances, not a blank check guaranteeing any ambition a believer can imagine.
