One Mind through Humble Concern for Others
The call to unity is grounded in realities the Philippians already know: consolation in Christ, the comfort of love, fellowship of the Spirit, and deep mercy. Paul then identifies the enemies of unity—selfish rivalry, empty glory, and an obsessive focus on one’s own interests. The remedy is “lowliness of mind,” deliberately valuing others and attending to their needs.
Where this fits in the story: Jesus taught that greatness in his kingdom is measured by service rather than domination. Paul now prepares the reader to see that principle embodied perfectly in Christ himself. The movement from verses 1–4 into verses 5–11 is crucial: Christian humility is not generic niceness; it takes its shape from the story of Jesus.
