Tamar and Perez: A Risky Family Story Becomes a Blessing
The elders’ second blessing reaches back to one of Genesis’ most surprising family episodes: Tamar and Judah in Genesis 38. They pray that the house formed by Boaz and Ruth will be like “the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah.”
That connection is explicit and important. Both stories involve a vulnerable widow, the threatened continuation of a family line, questions of kinship obligation, and an unconventional path by which that line survives. The stories are not identical—Tamar’s case and Ruth’s case operate differently—but Ruth 4 itself tells us to read them together.
