Confession, Forgiveness, and Cleansing
John now dismantles two false claims: “we have no sin” and “we have not sinned.” Denial of sin is self-deception and ultimately makes God a liar. The alternative is confession. God is described as faithful and just to forgive and cleanse, language that brings together covenant faithfulness, forgiveness, and purification. This section must be read with the rest of the letter: later statements that the one born of God does not continue in sin do not erase this opening admission that believers still need confession and cleansing. The tension is deliberate. John opposes both comfortable lawlessness and claims of sinlessness. Christian assurance rests not in pretending sin is absent, but in walking in the light, confessing what is true, and trusting God’s provision in Christ.
